We had a fantastic time at the Big Wild Campout with RSPB Northern Ireland in Cultra and Omagh. On Saturday past we joined our friends from Creggan Country Park to deliver a batty workshop at the Ulster American Folk Park. We were treated to a BBQ after setting up our tent, then went to get ready for our batty talk and treasure hunt at 7.30pm in the Omagh Meeting House. We learned the meeting house is a barn church building and is furnished as it would have been in the 1900s, lit with oil lamps and candles for a vintage atmosphere – perfect for a batty talk! At 9.30pm we took a walk around the grounds of the Ulster American Folk Park and found common pipistrelles, soprano pipistrelles and Leisler’s bats not to mention a few new roost records! It was great to know our furry friends were flying around the campsite to keep those pesky midges under control! We are told over 200 people attended the event and tickets were sold out! We would also like to say a huge thank you to our two volunteers Simon Pickett and Caoimhe Parke who helped out during the entire event. We would also like to say a huge thank you to RSPB for inviting us and organising a brilliant event; fun for all the family and a great way to engage with nature!
